[Diabetes-Talk] FB group

Lots of wrong info here.

First, again, no one needs to state which platform they want to participate on here. There is an NFB group for those who wish to join, but it's not necessary.

Second, I frequently use FB with no issue as do hundreds of other blind people, including most of the Federation. It's particularly easy to navigate nonvisually if using mobile FB on your computer or on your smart device. That's why it's the number one social media platform used by the NFB and blind people in general, Twitter being second.

Third, and most important, when you create a group, only members of the group are allowed to post and comment. I made the group private, so people have to be approved to join, and only members can post and see other posts. So, if in the group, it will show up on your feed, but only you and those who are members can see. No one, not even FB, can post anything in a group. This means no advertising, nothing, unless a group member post it, and if it's inappropriate to the group, admin can delete it. So no one can post anything we don't like or that goes against Federation philosophy, although, I will argue that I've seen several emails over the years on this email list that don't really hold up to NFB philosophy, but that's another discussion. But my point is that we have just as much control over our FB group as we do this list. Currently, I'm the only admin, but we can add other admins, like Bern, if we want.

The Federation alone has several FB, Twitter and Instagram accounts, because it understands that in addition to older forums, it needs to develop an online repore. So, understand, this email list is going nowhere; you can still post here. No one has to choose. But we also have a FB group for those who want to use it, and several people have joined it who aren't on this list, so it has potential to serve people who want to use it. But no one here is obligated to.

But please understand what you're talking about before going off about a subject you clearly are not as educated on as you think. I work in PR and am more acquainted with social media platforms. To make a point, once again, it's a private group, and only members of the group can post and see the post. So unless people have questions about how FB operates, or want the link again to join, stop the fear-mongering comments and bashing what has become an established means of communication for the Federation. No one is forcing anyone to join; I have simply advertised the fact that it exist for those who want it.

Bridgit
And finally, I don't know why you would go to the NFB and report this, because several Federation groups/divisions have FB groups, and they are typically much more active than their corresponding listserves. The blind parent group and parent's of blind kids division have 2 of the most active FB groups. The community service division has a group and it's growing in momentum. Several affiliates and chapters also use FB effectively, and these are just the ones I follow. I know there are many more. We even have a general national FB page. So it's absurd that the NFB would be against us having one.

Again, if you don't prefer FB, that's fine. But everyone, please keep in mind, the reality is that more people of all ages use social media, and it's a preferred platform to email. There's nothing wrong keeping the email list, but we also need an online presence. Like it or not, this is just a reality. FB reaches more people than an email list

I do not plan to switch the FB group or any diabetes talk. My objection is that Nfb continually makes the stupid changes that get here and make it sometimes difficult for people using voiceover or other computer software to use their application successfully. Nfb doesn’t seem to do anything about this, and I refuse to be a part of a little bit going to do stuff like this to us. The other important thing is that we’re going to be susceptible to outside interests and sponsor is intruding on as an outside people who will think they know better for us blind by bedbugs. This is our specific by and diabetes list and if it was up to me I would for bid at Facebook blind diabetes list.

Cordially,
Michael D. Barber

At the beginning of the year, I actually spent three hours going through all these groups, deleting, unfollowing, and whatever else it took to get rid of so many of these groups and swear I needed something good and stiff to drink when I finished !!! Whew!!
