Everyone's insurance is different to a degree, so Veronica is correct that
calling Dexcom is the key. My insurance is a Medicare Advantage plan
through Humana for now, since I will be changing to Aetna as of Jan. 1.
Anyway, I have to buy my Dexcom supplies directly from Dexcom. I just
received a one month's supply plus a new transmitter which all totaled $50.
Medtronic does not take Humana, so I have to get my pump supplies from CCS
Medical. CCS can also supply Dexcom supplies if I really wanted to switch
to them.
Medicare and its supplement companies are all different in what they will
cover. Because I am under 65, I have to be on the Advantage plans.
However, I am switching from Humana to Aetna, since my co-pays will go from
$45 to $25 for specialists. Except for my yearly exam with my Primary Care
Physician which has a zero co-pay, most of my other doctor visits are with a
specialist. Physical therapy visits are $40 with Humana and only $25 with
Aetna. Since I have PT often on my shoulder, this will be a big savings for
me. I've had to limit my PT visits to every other week, since $40/visit
really adds up. My shoulder would probably be better by now if I went twice
a week like I did in the past, but I just can't afford to do that now.
And, my monthly cost for meds will be much less, since Aetna's coverage gap
doesn't begin until your out of pocket costs are much higher than Humana's.
One supply of insulin put me in the coverage gap with Humana.
Anyway, I've learned a tiny bit more about Medicare and all of the open
enrollment options for supplements and advantage plans in the past month.
Except for getting a $200 bill from my dentist and then learning that my
dentist is not on Humana's accepted dentists, Humana has been decent
insurance for me since my primary insurance became Medicare starting in
March. At least I have insurance is what I keep telling myself. I know
that patience is the key, since Medicare has so many regulations, forms and
hoops for our doctors and places like Dexcom to go through to get our
supplies.

For all of you with insurance questions, if you call Dexcom directly, they
have insurance specialists who are there to help you figure that stuff out.
They have trainers who can help you learn the product. They have the people
who can get really specific with you.
These days they seem to have a zillion phone numbers but I still call the
one I started with: 877-339-2664 which stands for Dexcom 4.
There seem to be a lot of things that determine where you can buy your
sensors. For instance, with my insurance, I have to buy directly from
Dexcom. So it's really best to chat with someone who has the big ol'
computer data bases that can spit out accurate results when you give them
your information.
Dar, at least when I did it, if you're approved for a Dexcom, that means
coverage is arranged. But that knowledge would have come from Dexcom. So
please give them a call.
