[Diabetes-Talk] The Press

It depends on the media you're pursuing and the angle of your story. I am contracted to write all press releases for a local entity serving the blind in Omaha, NE. It frequently receives news coverage, but it has also created a presence in the community. To be honest, I don't always see eye-to-eye on its philosophy, but it pays me very competitive freelance wages, and with me writing various communications, I have the opportunity to pepper my philosophy in its communications. But I say all this to illustrate that if you have a presence in a community and build a repore with the media, it's more likely a story will get covered. Beyond that, yes, a celebrity spokesperson goes a long way.

The challenge with the press is finding an interesting message. These days I doubt that just complaining about the lack of access would attract anyone's attention. Yes, they'll cover an actual law suit, but likely not just raising an issue. Now, if we had some famous person promoting our cause, then we might get somewhere but it's a tough opening. They'd certainly cover a big company actually doing something. But this stage is a tough one. And of course, how would the story end? They'd call Medtronic, who would say, we're working on it and it will come out soon. Oh happy ending, boys and girls. Not! If we could get some sort of congressional hearing, then we could get coverage. Hmmm. Not too likely at the moment. I'm certainly open to creative marketing skills. Just my quarter's worth on a horribly smoky day.
