Promoting Health Equity in Cardiovascular Disease (NHLBI T32):
 Postdoctoral Research Presentations
MAY 8TH
10:30 - 12:00
Dr. Marisol McDaniel
Examination of the San Antonio
Built Environment:
Neighborhood context and
healthy lifestyle behaviors
The neighborhood environment can affect
children engaging in healthy lifestyle
behaviors such as eating fruits and
vegetables and being physically active. Latinx
children are less likely to meet the
recommendations for fruit and vegetables
intake and physical activity than their nonHispanic white
counterparts. The built
environment and neighborhood perceptions
may illuminate possible opportunities for
intervention to reduce disparities in healthy
lifestyle behaviors of overweight and obese
Latinx children living in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Dr. Nazanin Heydarian
Characterizing disparities in chronic
disease self-management among
persons who are blind
Dr. Heydarian will present her research
characterizing the barriers and facilitators to
chronic disease self-management reported by
persons who are blind with diabetes. She will
present mixed methods findings, linking selfmanagement barriers to
diabetes distress and
outcomes.
