I was diagnosed in 2012 with type 2 and fortunately I had Michael Freeman to go to for support and he pointed me to the prodigy meter  was frustrating because it took so much blood but I got through that until Dexcom came along and now when a sensor or a transmitter fails I still use the prodigy and it kind	of works, but I would sure like to have a better meter.

Hi everyone.
I am really enjoying reading all of your stories. I am one of the lucky ones on this list. It's only been 33 years for me. The meter I started out with was really strange, but at least it was a meter, didn't talk but it beeped. I was also already blind and was age 34 when Type 1 came a-calling. I found it hard enough to adjust as an adult and feel very blessed that I didn't have to deal with this stuff as a teen-ager. I remember when I was hanging out in the hospital, thinking, well, many people with diabetes are blind so I won't have to invent everything. Ummm, I was surprised when I learned what hadn't been done for us. So within two months, I was talking with people at various companies. 
But there's a lot I missed and boy am I thankful. Congrats to the rest of you who did a good job with what you had.

Boy does that bring back memories. I have had diabetes for 60 years so I had it for over 20 years before we could test blood sugars. As I always became violently ill when having a hypoglycemic episode my doctors always suggested having a small amount of sugar in my urine to be safe. In general you don’t show sugar in the urine until your blood sugar is over 200 so we know what my blood sugars were and that was not all that great until new technologies Came along. I also remember the 2 inch long 18 gauge needles that my parents and I had to sharpen and daily boiling of needles and syringe is. I do wish I could have come home for lunch but we really didn’t understand at the time how important that was and how much that might’ve been able to help. I had to make do with school lunches and that was it.  I still have my original diet scale which was a high-quality product and still weighs things exactly down to 1 g. Of course, now I have a talking diet scale and still weigh most of my carbohydrate containing foods as looking at them to estimate is not a great option anymore.
If we had had today’s technology 50 or 60 years ago I would undoubtedly not be blind today.
I am so thankful for all of the technology that I am currently using.
