For whatever it is worth, when I worked in hospital billing, many of the reforms we had to make were initiated by Medicare and then adopted by private carriers. In my memory Medicare was the first to create a list of procedures that could not occur on the same patient: no circumcisions for female babies, and a penalty for prematurely discharging a patient so that he or she had to return to the hospital to finish treating what should have been fully treated initially.

I see Medicare as one of these programs we love to hate: all of us want on it, but all of us point to it when we fear the government is taking too much of our money and exerting too much control. Interestingly, it hasn't been until some of my relatives got on Medicare that they have ever had good health insurance. Being private business people, they judged they could not afford it. So I'll kick Medicare for not wanting to pay for my CGM because I'm only using a regular dose of Metformin, but I'm glad I'm no longer paying $1,100 a month for medical insurance.

I hope they start to exert some control over drug prices. I don't mind paying a bit more for drug research when other countries can't, but the price of insulin shows that there are reasons why few of us endorse unregulated capitalism when it comes to medicine. Oh, I want them to help us get devices we can use nonvisually. I'm not sure that will happen, but no doubt that will make them more controversial for those who use vision.

I'm not saying that at all! It's not that they don't wish to pay as much as the Feds are the world's largest burocracy and they're the very last to come on board because it's built up so much red tape that they themselves have to wade through before anything ever gets done!
