Hello All,
I want to give an update on the Mio Advanced infusion sets as well as the
Medtronic 780 insulin pump that just came out a week or two ago.
This morning I met with a Medtronic pump trainer who adjusted my current
Paradigm pumps rate for properly filling the canula in the Mio Advanced
infusion sets I was issued on my last pump supply order. While I find the
new design of the Mio Advanced infusion sets a tad more convoluted, it is
totally workable and usable for a diabetic who is totally blind. I can and
will continue using them with my existing pump.
During my time with the trainer I was shown the new Medtronic 780 insulin
pump that came out about 2 or three weeks back. It is a different layout
than the current Paradigm that I am using. My current pump needs to be held
on its side to position the screen display on top and four buttons on the
bottom edge running from left to right. On the new 780 model they turned it
around so the pump is held vertically positioning the screen on top. Under
the display is a circular layout of buttons with the Act/Okay button in the
center and arrow keys around it. There is a back-out button to the upper
left of the circle. All of these are tactile and easy to feel.
There is no unlocking of the screen or needing to see the screen to access
features. If the Medtronic pump is used with the Medtronic glucose sensors
the pump can be totally automated to adjust insulin delivery for low and
high glucose numbers. The trainer said there is an app that works with the
CGM &iphones but I did not get to try that out. I think the name of the app
is gardian something or other. If a person chose not to use Medtronic CGM
then you cannot use the automated features of the pump and could just go
with the Dexcom CGM and bolis manually on your own. There also used to be a
requirement of calibrating twice per day with the Medtronic 770 pump, but in
the 780 they removed the need to do any calibrations with the CGM.
I'm not yet ready to upgrade to a new pump but I will look at this one again
come next year. The one thing I did not like is they removed the audio beeps
on counting back the number of units when I gave it a number of presses for
a bolis. It did vibrate back, but that was done at the point the insulin was
being delivered. So this would require utmost care when pressing the button
for insulin delivery. Still I will keep this pump in mind and look at it
more seriously come next year.
HTH.
Eileen
