Minutes, August 8 Des Moines Chapter National Federation of the Blind of Iowa
The pledges were recited.
The meeting was called to order at 2:09.
25 people were present.
Secretary's Report Terry Hall moved to adopt the Secretary's Report. Mike Barber seconded the motion. The motion carried.
Treasurer's Report Reporting Period 5/31/2020-7/31/2020 Beginning Balance $1,676.23. Ending Balance $1,801.24. Terri Wilcox moved to accept the Treasurer's report. Mike Barber seconded the motion. The Treasurer's Report was approved. Scott Van Gorp gave a State of the State address. There was a fantastic turn out for the Friday caucus. Iowa contributed money for door prizes and 3 funds and the running of the National Convention. State Convention is still at the Holiday Inn. The Board will decide whether to have Convention in person or virtually on August 9. There is an organizational complaint regarding accessible ballots for absentee voting. Accessible education is a concern as some education is occurring virtually. Iowa is contributing to the Pac plan. A number of new members are joining the affiliate. Welcome back Mary McGee! Welcome Sara Coleman and Craig Deichmann.
It is not certain whether we will have an accessible absentee ballot for the 2020 election. The Secretary of State has not been reachable. A public stand is suggested. Write letters to the Secretary of State. Plan to vote! Legislative approval is not needed to have an accessible ballot. This is because of The Help America Vote Act. There is already precedent for this. An email with correct language is suggested. Contact Mike Barber at (515)284-1569 or m.barber817 at gmail.com
Terri Wilcox moved to invite Sara Coleman and Craig Deichmann into the Des Moines Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Iowa. Terry Hall seconded the motion. The motion carried.
Presidential Release 496 was played.
The 50/50 prize went to Barbra Hammel. When we meet in person, tickets can be purchased via cash app or with cash.
We will meet virtually on September 12.
Scheduling rides in advance helps get transportation. Rides may take longer to get.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:17.
Respectfully Submitted, Terri Wilcox, Secretary, Des Moines Chapter, National Federation of the Blind of Iowa
