Safety and Support Updates: Code of Conduct

This is an update regarding our <https://nfb.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=22416&qid=5818971> code of conduct. The National Federation of the Blind is currently conducting a deep review and revision of its code of conduct standards. While the code remains in effect, the Federation's Board of Directors has agreed to review all code of conduct complaints regarding sexual misconduct, harassment, and abuse without respect to when they occurred. This temporary lifting of the time restriction on investigating reports will be in effect until January 1, 2022, at which time a new time standard will be implemented. The board expects to decide upon the new time standard in the fall of 2021 when it adopts a revised code of conduct.

This is part of our ongoing commitment to transformative change and accountability and we want those who have been harmed to have an opportunity to be heard. If you have a report about specific instances of sexual misconduct, file a code of conduct complaint through the <https://nfb.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=22417&qid=5818971> NFB Code of Conduct form, email <https://nfb.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=22432&qid=5818971> code at nfb.org, or call the dedicated voicemail box at 410-659-9314, extension 2475.

Board of Directors Statement Regarding Constitution and Code of Conduct

On July 24, the National Federation of the Blind Board of Directors unanimously released a <https://nfb.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=22418&qid=5818971> statement regarding the NFB constitution and code of conduct. Those who wish to comment on the topic and provide input to the board should, by September 1, 2021, send an email to <https://nfb.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=22419&qid=5818971> boardofdirectors at nfb.org or leave a message at 410-659-9314, extension 2263. The board expects to receive and review the final report of the Federation’s Special Committee later this fall. Thus, while we anticipate our review continuing after September 1, 2021, we are eager to receive suggestions and feedback as soon as possible.

* Please note that we just added an <https://nfb.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=22420&qid=5818971> MP3 audio version of the Special Committee’s interim report which was made available by the NFB board of directors on July 1, 2021.

Recording Available of Open Call with Tonya Baña

Currently, any code of conduct complaint describing sexual abuse or misconduct is reviewed by an external party. The current external review firm is <https://nfb.org/civicrm/mailing/url?u=22421&qid=5818971> Tonya Baña LLC, which is based in Baltimore, Maryland. On June 6, the survivor-led task force hosted an open call with Tonya Baña to answer questions from the community. Access the recording:
