[DSM-Iowa] State Fair Parade August 9

The blind of Iowa do need to be seen as part of the community. The theme of this year’s state fair is past, present and future. The blind of Iowa have all of those and we need to show it. According to my memory this is the first time in many years that the blind of Iowa have been part of the State Fair parade. The public as a whole don’t see blind people out participating and here is a good chance. 

 

Many years ago the NFBI had a Whitecane Drill Team that performed in the State Fair Parade. It was fun and showed what we can do. I encourage people to sign up for this opportunity. I wish my legs were up to participating myself but I certainly hope many of the rest of you will take advantage of this opportunity.

IOWA STATE FAIR PARADE

WHEN: AUGUST 9, 2023

TIME: Staging will start at 5:00 pm, Parade at 6:15 pm.

LOCATION: Capital complex to 15th Street

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE: Staff, Clients, Students past and present, and Family Members

WHAT ARE WE DOING:  walking in the Fair Parade (no vehicles or floats)

 

Every big event has a parade, Thanksgiving, New Year’s, St. Patrick’s Day, Disney, and the classic Iowa State Fair.  August 9,2023 is your chance to participate in a classic Iowa tradition. The Iowa State Fair parade displays past, present, and future Iowa. The parade represents community, growth, and tradition.  For almost 100 years the Iowa Department for the Blind has worked in communities across the state to educate, empower and work with blind Iowans. This year we are proud to walk, no vehicles or floats,  in the Iowa State Fair parade to represent and promote our community.
