He was born June 27, 1949 in Des Moines, Iowa to Alexander and Priscilla (Lawrence) Barber. He married Kimberley Ray on September 3, 2005.</span><span style='font-size:13.5pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif;color:#5D3B47'><br><br><span style='background:white'>After receiving his AA from AIB, Michael began a long and rewarding career with the Iowa Department for the Blind. He selflessly served others for years before retiring in 2014. Michael’s calm and gentle nature, his patience and kindness toward others, and his enthusiasm to teach were traits from which many benefited.</span><br><br><span style='background:white'>Retirement didn’t damper Michael’s need and desire to serve as he became a board member on the National Federation of the Blind of Iowa to which he also served as President for eight years, the Friends of the Iowa Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, Consumer Advisory Committee, Diabetes Action Division, and the Summit House HOA Board. He also collaborated with other consumer groups, Disability Rights Iowa, National Organization of American Council of the Blind and the National Federation of the Blind to try to improve accessible voting for the blind. He fought these battles up until his passing.</span><br><br><span style='background:white'>Michael is survived by his loving wife Kimberley, two sons Mark Allen Barber and Matthew Alexander Barber both of Des Moines, IA; daughter Melody Anne Barber of Kansas City, MO; step-daughter Desiree Van Polen (Steve) of Victor, IA; grandson Leo Cassiday; step-granddaughters Emily, Natalie and Taylor; 3 siblings Gregory Barber, Stephen Barber and Margaret Reseland all of Des Moines, IA; sister-in-law Lisa (Larrie) Jemison of Havana, FL; Gary (Jerron) Kerr of Donahue, IA; Diana (Wayne) Williams of Albia, IA and several nieces and nephews.</span><br><br><span style='background:white'>He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Alexander Barber and his wife Irene; brother Ronald Barber and his wife Cheryl; brother-in-law David Reseland; sister-in-law Beverly Barber and father and mother-in-law Ray and Alice Kerr.</span><br><br><span style='background:white'>Memorial services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 27 at Iles Westover Chapel.
