Here is a short page and associated downloads which some of you might  
find of interest. It describes the method I employed at the talking  
book library of Western Australia to insure books were giving unique  
postions in a file system by use of the Dewey Decimal System as  
implemented in a computer file system.

It includes .zip archives of the empty directory structures for both  
Dewey Decimal and Library of Congress classification schemes.
