[Dtb-talk] nls player questions

Another thing to consider is that a lot of more modern flash drives
seem to have issues with the USB suspend mode that the NLS playe ruses
to save power and maximize battery life. In my testing, I have had
more drives fail than work because of this. However, there is a way
you can disable USB Suspend:
If you paste the following text into Notepad, then save it as a file
in the ROOT directory of your flash drive and call it "options.xml" -
be careful, some Notepad versions will append a .txt so you'll get
options.xml.txt - then your NLS player will not use USB suspend. It
may reduce battery life by a bit, but I haven't noticed a significant
reduction.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<dtbm xmlns="http://www.loc.gov/nls/DTBM">
<directive>
<noUSBSuspend />
</directive>
</dtbm>
(Hint: To save it as options.xml and making sure that the .txt doesn't
get appended, when you ave, enter "X:\options.xml" into the file name
edit, INCLUDING the quotes, and replacing the X with the drive letter
of your flash drive.)
That being said, I do have a couple of U3-based drives that completely
fail on the NLS player, even after U3 has been removed. In such cases,
unfortunately, the drive is not usable at all. This will be evidenced
by the player immediately announcing "Cartridge error" upon inserting
the flash drive.
If the player does function at all with the drive (e.g. it plays for a
couple minutes before it quits, or it manages to scan the directory
but won't start playing, etc) then the XML file above should solve the
problem.
