Why are you continually blaming the equipment? It may be perfectly fine but
certain file formats may not be easily interpreted.

Fred,
Thanks for your response.
As an update to my original question, when I looked at the card with my
computer I discovered that in one of the folders, the one for other books
there was a folder with dozens of corrupt filenames in it with truly weird
dates and huge file sizes reported. Clearly the directory entries were
corrupted by some process. Windows Vista reported the filenames as being
illegal and too long and they were filled with truly odd characters.
I Expect the unusually long start-up time and the other file I/O operations
were the result of this. Windows couldn't erase the files either, the card
had to be reformatted. This was a commercial CD of MP3 files which I had
copied onto the Stream for my wife about 2 years ago, one of a series of
books I thought could be archived there for listening to again in the
future. We often buy books or get them as gifts then donate them on to our
local public library.
It seems to me I had a similar problem a couple of years ago but my memory
is a bit vague now on the details.
On one hand it is gratifying to know this is not an isolated event but on
the other hand it is depressing to think that this equipment is so unstable.
I suppose Kindle users also have to deal with similar failures otherwise
they wouldn't be so popular among sighted readers.
Dale Leavens.
