Latin America Highlights: Promoting accessible books for people with print disabilities
In Latin America, efforts to advance the Marrakesh Treaty were a focus at a workshop held during the Congress of the Latin American Union of the Blind (ULAC) in Lima, Peru.
Organized by WIPO’s Accessible Books Consortium (ABC) and ULAC, the event highlighted challenges and progress in the region.
* Delegates from 19 countries discussed strategies to increase availability of accessible books.
* German Bautista, ULAC’s Second Vice President, congratulated the ABC Global Book Service for surpassing the one million accessible titles milestone, including 70,000 in Spanish. Pablo Lecuona of Tiflonexos emphasized the need for affordable reading devices and better cross-border sharing of books.
* Martin Moscoso, former Director of the Peruvian Copyright Office, called for renewed implementation strategies and cross-sector collaboration to expand access to reading materials.
These efforts in both the Pacific and Latin America underscore the global commitment to making books accessible to all and reinforcing the impact of the Marrakesh Treaty worldwide.

Disability advocates and government representatives from nine Pacific nations came together recently at the "Right to Read" Conference in Sydney, Australia, where they pledged to advance the Marrakesh Treaty and support initiatives to increase numbers of accessible reading materials available to people with visual impairment.
Organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the event welcomed participants from the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu.
* Personal stories shared by advocates illustrated the profound impact that accessible reading materials have on education, employment, and social inclusion.
* Delegates and speakers emphasized the need for continued collaboration to to build networks that connect organizations across the Pacific, promote accessible reading resources such as the ABC Global Book Service, and strengthen legal frameworks that support people with print disabilities.
* Participants committed to advancing this shared vision by working to break barriers and enable individuals with print disabilities to benefit fully from the Marrakesh Treaty.
With further initiatives planned, including community-building efforts and increased accessible book production, the "Right to Read" Conference marked a pivotal step toward creating equal access to knowledge for all Pacific Islanders.
