[Electronics-talk] anti virus and on line protection software

I generally agree, but with a software firewall it's pretty easy to know 
when you have some suspicious software on your system trying to get out 
on the network. I'm sure you can capture this from your hardware 
firewall, but I've never taken the time to figure out how. It also 
depends a lot on your network setup. A hardware firewall can keep your 
system safe from attacks from outside your network but not from within. 
My wife and two sons both have computers on my home network, so my 
hardware firewall will keep my system safe from anyone outside my home 
network, but it won't protect me from any attacks originating from my 
family's PC's, and I can't keep them from contracting viruses!

If you have a laptop then a software firewall will travel with you and 
help keep you safe when using networks when you travel. The absolute 
safest would be to use both a hardware firewall and a software firewall.

Note that on my home PC, I don't use a software firewall, but I am 
behind a hardware firewall. At work, where I use a laptop, I am required 
to install a software firewall. This is to protect me when I travel with 
my laptop as well as keep the spread of viruses down inside my company's 
network.
