The iPod expects a database file to read that contains information
about the songs loaded on it. In other words, you can not simply copy
music to the ipod and have it play.

There used to be some iTunes clones that would generate the database
files.

Googling for itunes replacements turned up a couple.

I haven't done this in 3 years or so.

The other option is RockBox, which is an OS you can put on your ipod,
that makes it much more blind friendly to manage.
