[Electronics-talk] Braille watches [was "RE: Help with Grundig Talking attomic watch!"]

I've checked EBAY periodically since last summer, and unfortunately, I've
never seen them on there. I just checked recently, for example, and no joy.
Maybe I'm just doing something wrong, and I'm not searching correctly.

The vibration from the tissot are very noticeable even to folks with some
paralysis in the fingers usually.
I bought three off eBay recently for $100 which is much less than the $339
price tag most watch stores have them for.
They are water proof and a great looking time piece as well.

The Tissot Silen-T is a vibrating watch, but I'm not sure if it'll help you
since I think you feel the vibrations with your finger tips. I'm not exactly
sure how it works; I've just read descriptions about it on the web.

I've got a 30 year old self-winding braille watch that was really nice in
its day when it worked. A jeweler gave me an estimate of $150 to repair it.
I have a number of other braille watches that require winding and there is
nothing wrong with that. My issue with braille watches is that I have a lot
of trouble feeling the hour hand. I am loosing feeling in my hands. I
really hate using talking watches at work so I try to make do with the
braille watch. This usually works because when I am in a meeting, I usually
know what hour it is. I wish someone would come up with a vibrating or
pulsing watch. I have read about a vibrating pocket watch, but it is too
big in my opinion.

I've had two Seiko watches last me the last 20+ years. I think the second
one is getting close to the end of it's life. I'll probably replace it with
another Seiko, but I'm also thinking about a Tissot Silen-T. The Silen-T
doesn't seem to be made any more, and I can't find any in stock anywhere. If
anyone has a lead on where I could get one, let me know.

I like the braille watches because then I don't have to let anyone know I'm
checking the time. I also like the Seiko because it's pretty stylish for a
braille watch and I don't need the large numbers and the color contrast
since I'm totally blind.

Hi, Dave,

It's been a long time since I've seen a really reliable Braille watch. I
also have a wind-up, bought, I think, in 1976 from a California merchant.
It was called the Herman-Berman watch. It still works fine. A few years
later I bought a Saiko because I thought it might be more reliable, which I
needed. It was a good watch. It died after the turn of the century. I
bought another Saiko. Perhaps that one lasted six years. It's been sitting
here for some time now. The hands are too loose, and Saiko wantimeed $150
to repair it. Outragezs! I thought. Then I bought a braille watch from the
NFB. That one lasted two years.
It died about the time the warranty ran out. I have another wind-up that
dates from 1968 and is a keepsake. It gains 10 minutes an hour! Whoa!

If anyone knows of a truly reliable and durable battery-operated braille
only watch, I'd surely like to know what it is and where to get it.

Evelyn
