[Electronics-talk] Talking scale recommendations

While BMI is an acceptable method of measuring overall weight for optimal
health, one must understand that it is simply a ratio of weight to height,
using population norms as recommendations. it becomes inaccurate if you
carry the least amount of extra muscle mass, so this caveat must be kept in
mind. The scale under discussion uses electric impedance to measure percent
body fat with the fact that an electric pulse takes differing times to
travel through the same volumes of muscle tissue vs. adipose tissue due to
different water contents in the two tissue types. This travel time is imput
into a formula that then calculates percent body fat. One must keep in mind
though that the least amount of moisture on the feet or hands if a hand held
unit is used, will drastically alter results. The most accurate method of
measuring percent body fat is water emersion, but this method is impractical
outside the research lab. The method that is the most practical and
somewhat accessible to the general public is skinfold analysis in which
three pinches of skin, usually at the tricep, quadracep, and oblique is
input into a formula that takes age into account. Even this method though
has its own limitation as it is important to have the same person do this
measurement each time. Most gyms provide this measurement. So I suppose
the take home message is that each method commonly used is fairly
subjective, and if these methods are understood, they can be used as
measures of overall health.
