[Electronics-talk] iPhone manual [was "Re: accessible verizonphones"]

I find user manuals to be a great resource, especially when diving into
a new technology. They can give you a good over view of the product and
take you places that you'll never stumble on through trial and error or
using the on line help. I also find them a great reference source. You
can search through a manual and get the answer almost immediately and
not have to wait until someone else knows or thinks they know the answer
to your question.

That being said, they're only one source of information. I also rely
heavily on trial and error, on line help, internet search engines and
user groups and mailing lists. I almost never read a manual through to
the end before starting to play with my new toy. I may also skip a
manual altogether if the tool is simple enough or I just want it to
perform one specific task. A tool as complex as a cell phone, with it's
own operating system and a revolutionary accessible interface like the
Iphone (and add in the fact that it's costing me as much as it is), and
I'm going to go through the manual and make sure I'm getting everything
out of it that I can. I also appreciate the fact that Apple chose to
generate an accessible manual and include in it the documentation of the
access technology.

I don't like reading posts from people who are preaching to me on how
they're way of doing something is superior to my own, and I'm afraid
that's what I've done here. I apologize for that. My only intent was to
point out the pros of a good manual. I can see how manuals won't be to
everyone's liking, especially when they may not be accessible and may
not be written in such a way that a blind person using access technology
can get much out of them, but that doesn't seem to be the case with
Apple, the iPhone and VoiceOver.
