The Colortest from APH will probably tell you more than you want to
know. It will give you the color and variables such as "gray with tones
of purple". If you desire, it will give you the saturation and hue
values in numeric terms. If you push down a button while running the
wand over an item, it will emit a tone that will change pitch when the
color changes, so you can detect a pattern like stripes etc. And, if
that isn't enough, it also doubles as a light detector. With all that
functionality comes a steep price. I bought mine many years ago, and
paid about $600, and I understand that it is at least $100 more now. If
all you want to know is if something is blue or red, this is probably
overkill, but if you want detailed info, which may be useful in some job
settings, this one may be worth it to you.
