If you have a sound card in a dos machine not windows that is supported
by the nhsound.zip package it can be installed in addition to nethack
for sounds. Nethack can use graphics but you don't want to play with
graphics if you can't see the screen at all since then you'll need the
ascii characters to tell you about your surroundings. All of that is in
how you set the game's configuration for use on your computer.
For Jolene, enable voiceover is under settings on the ipad but once done
all of the jestures used change.
