I know this might be a little late, but you might want to check out the SARA.  I'm not sure if that's the correct acronym, but it is a stand alone unit, but it is pretty small and has a digital camera versus a scanner, which has more limitations.  

See if you can find it on the net.  It's deffinately worth the look.  

I am getting one soon, as soon as Bureau of blind Services gets all the paper work done and it gets here.
