a technique is to place tape around the cable part near the connector.
    use different width tape ... and different combination of patterns.

connector, wide, narrow
connector wide wide narrow
connector narrow wide narrow
etc.

mark each end of the same cable the same way... so you know you have both 
ends of the same cable.

if you need to mark the cable location on the device...
    make a map for your self...    listing the relative location of each 
connector..

left to right or top to bottom... etc.

 put the same tape pattern   on this map,


if you have good color vision... you may want to use color tape...
