[Electronics-talk] Identifying Groceries

Thanks everyone who explained the differences in scanning technology.
I've gotten pretty good at finding the barcodes on most cans and bottles
using Digit-Eyes by doing the following.
1. I activate the Digit-Eyes scan.
2. I hold the phone in my left hand with the screen facing my palm, my 4
fingers along the left side and my thumb on the right side. My pinky is
down at the bottom corner of the left side. This is important for the next
step.
3. I hold the back of the phone up against the front edge of the counter so
that the tip of my pinky is below that edge. So maybe the bottom edge of
the phone is about 1/2 of an inch below the bottom edge of the counter.
4. I put the can or bottle up against the back of the phone so that it
centered on the phone camera lens.
5. slide the can or bottle back away from the phone approximately 6-8
inches, and slowly turn it until the barcode is detected.
6. If the container is tall or large, I might move the phone up so that its
bottom edge sits on the counter.
I have not found a sure fire way to scan boxes and bags, but I am working on
it.
HTH,
Annette

Gee! It was $29 when I bought it. The only apps that cost more for me were
Navigon and the new Sendero Seeing Eye GPS app.
I have never been able to get the hang of locating the bar codes so
Digit-Eyes could read them.

I use Digit-Eyes on my iPhone 4. It works well once I got the hang of how
far to hold the phone from the item, and to move the item or the phone
slowly. The cost is either $19 or $9 in the Apple App Store.

Hi All,
I have an ID Mate, which I love. It is a stand alone device that I can wave
over the bar code of a grocery item and it scans the bar code and tells me
what that item is. I have a friend who wants something that does the same
thing, but the ID Mate costs $1,200, and she would prefer not to pay that
much. I am wondering what other devices are out there that work the same way
(by scanning the bar code). Please share anything you are aware of -- iPhone
apps as well as stand alone devices.
Thanks,
Sarah
