[Electronics-talk] Android? Good Idea?

Jim,

I agree with you about the superiority of the Ipad verses the Android
platform and accessibility. I also recognize that not all us blind folks
can afford the price of the Ipad. As for myself I still haven't justified
getting a tablet because for the price I don't have enough need for one. I
use my iphone and am happy with that.

Thanks Jim, this is good food for thought. Maybe I'll take a step back and
consider the idea of a tablet for my needs in general. Thank you.

Respect,

Amin

Walt, when you say "both are good", are you saying that both are equally
good, as in both have their strengths and weaknesses?

If so, I would challenge that statement. I think the iPad is a vastly
superior user experience for a blind person than any of the android tablets.

There are a few reasons not to buy an iPad. One is price. If your budget
forces a choice between android and nothing, you could give the Nexus 7
android tablet a try, but you'll find that explore by touch is not anywhere
near as tight and reliable on the android tablet as it is on the iPad.
Another reason is if there's an app you need that only runs on android.
Nearby Explorer by APH is the only such app I'm aware of right now that
would likely fit that category.

Another question I'd ask Amin is if you need a tablet. I used an iPhone
every day, and have used various iPads over time. I've found there's very
little I can do on a tablet that I can't do on a phone. If you have some
vision and want the extra screen space, then that would be different. Also,
if you are reading large documents, and want to keep track of their layout
(i.e. where the text actually appears in the document), that might also be a
good reason to get a tablet.

Bottom line, if you need a tablet, and if you can afford to do it, spend the
extra money on an iPad.

Hope this helps,

Jim
