[Electronics-talk] follow-Up to my Last Message

You're lucky that you can buy your own washer/dryer. The new Maytag
commercial washers and dryers in the laundry room of my apartment complex
are pretty much inaccessible without sighted help because they have flat
membrane touchpad controls that cannot be modified in any way. Plus, they
now use a card-based system instead of coins to activate them. Of course,
the vending machine that is used to add value to the card is totally
inaccessible because the display has no speech output. I even asked my
building manager whether the company that makes the card vending machine
offered a more accessible model with speech output or some other form of
audible confirmation so that a blind person could independently verify the
amount on the card. He just laughed. So I now always need sighted help to
do my laundry. In the good old days when the machines had mechanical knobs
and buttons and accepted quarters, I could do the laundry myself.
