Tracy, I'll happily share anything I learn from my shopping.  I'm afraid though that like you, I'll end up having to go with the older traditional model.

When our washer died a few years ago, I too was looking at ones that were
energy- and water-efficient.  However, every single one had complicated digital menus to navigate to set them, so I gave up and got the old cheap model, which had nice accessible dials and knobs that could be easily marked.
If you find what you're looking for, I'd be interested to hear about it.
