I haven't read this whole thread yet, but maybe it's another tool in the
toolbox, though I don't want to be loaded down with stuff to get through the
day as we once were.

I know only one guy that had that laser cane. He was a Vietnam vet, and
when I asked him the price, he said they never told him.
I heard rumors that it cost around $2,500. Does anyone know how much that
cane cost?
Not that I want one. I'm old school. I like new technology. But I become
paranoid if I'm out with my laser cane or laser shoes or mini guide--which I
have used--and all of a sudden, the battery dies. Then what?
and believe me. Just by using the mini guide for a week showed me how one
can get used to having it. So that's why I rather use my built-in mobility
skills instead of electronic obstacle detecting devices.
But I'm not going to knock them. There will always be someone that could
use it. Especially those that experience vision loss later in life. I,
fortunately, [if one could view it that way] lost my vision at the age of 4.

So adjusting to not having vision was no problem since I had vision for such
a short period.
I work with individuals that are in their 50's and 60's that are having a
hard time adjusting to blindness. And I must admit, I have to remind myself
that they are new at this and I'm not, when it comes to perceiving how to do
certain tasks.

So bring on the shoes. Hades! If they come up with a hat and glove combo
that will make mobility easier and safer, then go for it!
Vince
