Hi Chris
If you want an iPod go for the iPod Touch. The Fifth Generation is what
you want since it's the current model. To get you started after powering
on the device and waiting about a minute find the round tactile button
located at the bottom called home. Press this three times rapidly to
activate VoiceOver which will talk you through setting up the device.
Afterwards please visit
www.applevis.com
and explore. This is a resource for anything Apple and accessibility
including iDevices.
Good luck.

In other words, when I take the device out of the box, how do I get started. Any other assistance, recommendations, suggestions, or thoughts would be much appreciated.

I know that with iPhones you have to purchase a data plan to access online features. Is this true for the iPods in order to access the internet or can you just do so from your already purchased home internet plan via wireless access? Hopefully this question makes some sense:).
