The DAISY format in and of itself is not a protected format. If you do a book, according to the basic DAISY standard, it will not be protected and can be played by any DAISY capable player. Copy protection can be added to the book, such as NLS and others do, but you don't have to do this.

My agency, Minnesota State Services for the Blind, Communication Center, records books for our customers, and we do not add protection. We rely on the vetting of our customers as protection. Ultimately we will probably go the copy protection route, but haven't yet.

In general, the DAISY format has been used by organizations serving disabled persons, but it is an open standard and anyone could implement it in a player or software program. It is, in fact similar to the ePUB standard which will probably ultimately replace it.

Hello,
If the player does not play nls or learning ally books, then what kinds of books does it play?
Maybe they meant it plays unprotected ebooks like those you'd download off a website such as Project Gutenberg.
Daisy is a format that is protected somehow and I thought could only be played on certain players, mainly those from blindness vendors.
Of course, not all daisy books are via nls or learning ally, but for blind users, these are major sources of books.
And what sort of audio books will it play? I would imagine standard audio files like WMA, WAV or mp3 formats.
That excludes audible. This means that it might play commercial audiobooks.

Chip you are correct. I know I think that way when I hear DAISY I think of NLS or Learning ALLy so thanks. Don't worry Liz.
