[Electronics-talk] Braille Label Maker

In addition to these points, I would like to add that the costs of making
reliable mechanical devices has risen greatly. I once saw a prototype of a
label maker with a Perkins style keyboard that was all mechanical. It
worked very nicely, but the price was not going to be much cheaper than this
device is. Look at the price of the Perkins Brailler itself as an example,
and the development costs of that device have long been covered.

I've tried a number of different label making devices over the years,
including that little frame you can put into a Perkins brailler. I have
pretty much gone back to using a slate and stylus for labels. This is an
option that is often overlooked. Even if one is not fast at using a slate
and stylus, the time it takes is not that bad when you take into account the
time one spends spinning a dial on a label gun or lining up a frame in a
braille writer.

I have also found that often simply brailling on mailing labels is a good
alternative when the size doesn't matter too much. Mailing labels are not
as durable as is labeling tape, but the braille lasts longer than you might
think. This works especially well when the label is only needed for a month
or so such on a package of food.

Therefore, there are some cheap alternatives, but the convenience of this
device makes it something I might consider. I wonder what the quality of
the braille is? That is one thing I like about using the slate and stylus.
I get nicer dot quality than I did either with a labeling gun or the frame
for the Perkins Brailler, even though both produced reasonable braille.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

The label maker is battery operated or can be plugged in to an electronic
outlet. It has a Perkins style keyboard. The label tape is automatically
advanced as you write, and I believe that there is no need to advance the
tape prior to cutting. Probably the biggest difference is that you can plug
a standard computer USB keyboard into the unit to produce the braille label.
The use of a QWERTY allows family members, teachers, employers and
co-workers to create labels easier and faster.

Yes, the price does appear to be high, but the cost of research, development
and production is high. It is the first major change in the area of braille
label makers in the more than 40 years that I have been aware of them. They
are selling a product that only has the potential of being sold to a small
segment of the population. In order for them to recuperate their financial
investment in a reasonable amount of time, the price is set higher than many
can afford. Does anyone remember the price of refreshable braille displays
when they first came out? Was it something like $10,000 to $20,000 for a 40
or 80 cell display? Through the end of tomorrow (September 30) you can
purchase the Perkins Mini 24 cell refreshable braille display for less than
$1900 including shipping.

It's so expensive because it has (as I understand it) a Perkins-style
keyboard and because it's electronic.

Yes I'm curious what exactly does this
labeler do and why is it so expensive?

Hi, I can't believe that a LabelMaker would cost $600 or more. How in the
world do they justify that price?
