[Electronics-Talk] Accessible Stove

Peter:

My stove must be like yours. The burners have knobs and the oven is a flat
screen display. I put Dymo Tape Braille labels on mine. Across the bottom
is Bake, Broil and Warm. At the top is the start and cancel buttons. In
between is the up and down arrows. I did not bother to label the timer and
clock features. I use a Braille or talking timer. Fortunately my oven will
beep to let you know it has started at 350 degrees. Then you can push the
down or up arrow once and it will move up or down by 5 degrees. Once you
push start, it will beep when it reaches your desired temperature. I am
renting so did not purchase this stove but, I have managed to make it work
out for me. At the time I moved in, I could not convince them to purchase a
different oven with knobs and there was not a Braille overlay available. We
still have lots of work to do to make all appliances and electronics
accessible to us. I don't know if we will ever see it happen but, I sure
wish it would.

Hello Dave and everyone,

We had the same issue when we moved to our current apartment. The
burners can be controlled with knobs but the oven controls are a flat screen
display. We hadsome of Mary's co-workers and members of the Region 20 Lion's
Club help us place Braille labels on the oven control screen once Mary
created them.

Here is a real novelty -- an accessible appliance question. I am in the
market for a new stove. Does anyone have knowledge as to who might have
Braille overlays for the oven controls. In the less expensive stoves, there
are knobs for burners, but oven controls tend to be a flat panel.
