Actually, in part, I could not recall what the name of the AT Guys solution
was in fact. It is also the case that I have not ever seen it in use but it
is 10% of the cost of the other so... I also think portability is pretty
important for most tasks for which a bar code scanner would be used by a
blind person. Steve states that a Braille Note can be used and that does
somewhat address my portability issue. For me personally, if there was a
phone based solution that had the abilities that I think the Envision
America products do, I would pay much more than the cost for digit eyes but
people smarter than I indicate reasons why the phone may not work well for
that activity, the locating of the bar codes. To my knowledge, for example,
there are a good number of scanning apps that cost one tent of the cost of
KNFB Reader. However, I think that product does a superior job over those
others and would recommend it as the top shelf phone solution. Some will opt
for others because they do not have the funding but in my opinion, you get
what you pay for or that has been my experience with the less costly scan
and read phone apps.

Those stands are meant for OCR. This wouldn't solve the problem of having to
reposition the item to find the bar code if you didn't know where it is on
the package. Also, these stands are designed to scan flat surfaces, like
documents or pages in a book.

I've been told about a cardboard stand for your iPhone that allows you to
position the phone over the item you are attempting to scan.  This frees up
your hands to manipulate the item.  Sorry I cannot remember the name of it.

Andy said what I would have said. I have had, in my case, the Omni barcode
scanner for many years. Personally, I have tried Digit Eyes and I would love
to use it instead. I am truly unable to efficiently find bar codes using it.
If I was just getting in to this, I would buy Digit Eyes for $9.00 and see
if I could figure it out with practice. If I learned I could not, I'd have
only spent $9 and I would move on to seek some other solution.
The expensive scanners really do work very well but $1200 is not in
everyone's ready cash so...

Digit Eyes is probably the best because it was designed for use by blind
persons, but the biggest problem that blind people have with bar codes is
finding them. The reason that the $1200 device works better is because it
has an omnidirectional camera that will scan the package until it finds the
code. The iPhone's camera only sees straight ahead, so it is up to the user
to move the phone, the package, or both until you strike gold.

apps for the iphone.
If I can avoid the $1,200 for an id mate, that would be great.
Tried red laser a few years ago, but never got any joy.
