Hi Steve,
I'm really surprised to hear this Steve, as I did not practice especially much, and I had no trouble finding barcodes even on round bottles (which I would just rotate until the scanner beeped indicating it had spotted one). I have to wonder if your unit wasn't working properly, or if they came out with an upgraded unit at some time.
I have to say I am surprised this quantem hasn't completely filled this need for all blind users at home; yes, it's not portible ... but it's price still makes it very useful for at home use (most people have a pc, and even more so when I hear about being able to use it with the BrailleNote).

Chip,
The version I had also worked with a BrailleNote, so unless that has
changed, it does include more than just Windows PC's. I must say, though,
that it sounds as though you were better at using it than I was. I had some
trouble finding codes with it, but it could just be that I didn't work at it
long enough.
Best regards,
Steve Jacobson

Andy said what I would have said. I have had, in my case, the Omni barcode
scanner for many years. Personally, I have tried Digit Eyes and I would love
to use it instead. I am truly unable to efficiently find bar codes using it.
If I was just getting in to this, I would buy Digit Eyes for $9.00 and see
if I could figure it out with practice. If I learned I could not, I'd have
only spent $9 and I would move on to seek some other solution. The expensive
scanners really do work very well but $1200 is not in everyone's ready cash
so...

Digit Eyes is probably the best because it was designed for use by blind
persons, but the biggest problem that blind people have with bar codes is
finding them. The reason that the $1200 device works better is because it
has an omnidirectional camera that will scan the package until it finds the
code. The iPhone's camera only sees straight ahead, so it is up to the user
to move the phone, the package, or both until you strike gold.

Looking to see what the concensus of the community is on bar code reading
apps for the iphone.
If I can avoid the $1,200 for an id mate, that would be great.
Tried red laser a few years ago, but never got any joy.
Any information and or experiences would be helpful.
