[Electronics-Talk] Accessible Micro Waves, the Battle is Lost

Hi,

I moved into my current home in a senior housing development 2012. The oven
is a touch screen made by GE. My manager tried to get Braille overlay for
it but they told her they do not make them anymore. She then asked the
folks at the appliance store where they get all of our appliances and they
could not find another oven that had Braille overlays. I finally managed to
get bump dots on the buttons that control some settings and temperature and
the start and cancel buttons. Then I wrote a cheat sheet that I keep
hanging on my refrigerator that tells me what the dots mean. I could not
put the Braille labels right on the touch screen because there is not enough
room and if you touch it to read it changes the settings. Fortunately the
knobs to control the burners are ordinary round dials. This is becoming a
real problem for us and I wish something could be done to force
manufacturers to make all their products accessible.

I remember when I first moved into this building in 1984, the appliances
were GE. I had heard that GE made overlays for stoves and ovens. So, I
called them, and found out that they no longer did that. They just had
overlays for microwave ovens. And now, I guess they don't have that. Pam.

I can confirm that GE no longer provides braille overlays for microwaves. I
did not inquire about other appliances, but I'm guessing they no longer
provide braille overlays for them either.

Whirlpool no longer makes braille overlays, and I'm sure GE has followed
suit.
