[Electronics-Talk] Accessible Micro Waves, the Battle is Lost

It's probably just that they don't know braille, so they don't know how it
should be positioned. The last microwave we got, my husband and my brother
spent three hours labeling it. George had to give Butch the labels and tell
him what he was giving him, since Butch didn't know braille. Then he would
put each label on where it should go. We used plastic labeling sheets.
Anyway, my brother put the power level label on upside down. But when we
saw that, we didn't complain, since we could tell what it was, and it had
taken so long to do this thing. George had to write the labels after my
brother told him how big the buttons were for the labels to fit on, then he
had to cut them to fit. Unfortunately, most of the labels have fallen off
or slid out of position. I have to guess and use what's there to help me
know where to try to push on the pannel. I haven't found anybody who could
help me relabel this thing. Pam.

Jim,

I've never had a 1-piece overlay made. I use my ancient trusty 3M braille
labeler and make up my own abbreviations and have someone sighted to put the
labels on.

On the current (broken) microwave and on the last one, the Clock label was
applied upside down. Each was done by a different person. I think I used
clk for the abbreviation. I wonder what is about that for a sighted person
to think it belongs in the upside down position. It makes me chuckle.

Pam,
That is another part of the challenge, getting information that is accurate
from the manufacturer. My wife and I bought a range from GE in like 2005. We
called GE at that time because we had heard about some braille overlays but
were not sure for which appliances these were made. At that time, the person
with whom we spoke stated that GE provided them for ranges, but only for
electric ranges, not gas ones. That makes for some assumptions on the part
of GE but is also different from what you heard years before. So has anyone
on this list worked to get someone to create an overlay for them? This could
be done, but I am not sure anyone actually ever has done that.

I remember when I first moved into this building in 1984, the appliances
were GE. I had heard that GE made overlays for stoves and ovens. So, I
called them, and found out that they no longer did that. They just had
overlays for microwave ovens. And now, I guess they don't have that. Pam.

I can confirm that GE no longer provides braille overlays for microwaves. I
did not inquire about other appliances, but I'm guessing they no longer
provide braille overlays for them either.

Whirlpool no longer makes braille overlays, and I'm sure GE has followed
suit.
