Hi Arlene,

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner.

First, I talked to a Samsung rep who told me that the video description
feature is disabled because it needs to be enabled using my cable box. In
other words, the voice guide only works for the tv but does not work with
cable boxes or other devices connected to it.
I got someone to enable the video description as AT&T Uverse does not have
text to speech capabilities built in to the set top box. Now, the trick is
to find descriptive programming in my area. I used the tool on the AFB web
site that is supposed to help one find programs with video description, but
when I typed in my zip code, I got a prompt saying that nothing was
available.

I find that hard to believe since the Dallas/Fort Worth area is a large tv
market.
We do have other options besides AT&T Uverse including Direktv and Spectrum,
formerly Charter, but the trick is finding customer service reps who have
some knowledge about which boxes have the accessibility features.

I will keep you posted on what I find out.

Best

Liz

Peter, and, everyone, the week of thanksgiving, a lister named Mike here on
the electronics talk list informed us about the samsung tv with voice guide,
model number Samsung un32j5500afxza. Saturday of that week, about 3 or 4
days after reading his message we went to Best buy to purchase the tv and
it's really wonderful, it talks everything, all the menus, when going to
another channel it will tell you what show is on and other details, the
channel number and a few other bits of information. It talks all the menues
so you would be abled to turn on audio description and other functions. The
regular price for the tv is $280. When you get the tv home you could set the
tv up yourself by pressing a button that will turn the speech on and then
you can proceed to set everything up including scanning the channels in. The
infomation about this button is in both audio files that are included in the
folder and you can also read about the button in Mike's informative message
about the tv included in this message. To begin with here's information
about the tv which includes the messages from Mike that were posted to the
list and I have his demo of the tv in a folder that we put together, and
there's a little exchange of messages between Mike and I who was extremely
helpful when we first got the tv. Then we have a audio demo done about the
tv and also the text to speech with dish that was done by my boyfriend
Wayne. Now that we know even more about the tv, he's going to do another
audio file about the tv itself. If you have any questions please feel
welcome to write to us on and or off list though we're both on the list,
though our contact information will be at the end of the message to write
off list. Wayne had the idea of hooking the computer keyboard up to the tv
and you could use the keyboard as you do the remote, and we have a text
file about that in the folder. Also in the folder is the manual for this tv.

The tv remode for this tv is so well designed and talks everything. This tv
remote is one of the best designed tv remotes both of us have ever seen,
it's really straight forward. On the remote there's a learn remote button
so you can review what the buttons are, besides hearing the buttons speak
what they are as you use the remote regularly, which Mike writes about in
the messages included here and his demo audio file. In his message and demo
he clearly explains about the button that turns the speech on the tv.

It is going well with my Samsung 32 inch tv with voice guide! I am using an
over the air antenna. For the first time I can scan stations in, remove
stations from the line up I do not want & a thousdan other settings without
any sighted help!
You only have to know were 6 buttons are on the remote & then any totally
blind person can set this tv up right out of ; the box.

could do, though the remote is well designed and talks everything from the
