Firs and foremost when looking at sound equipment is set a price range. 
This range will determine what you can Do.
For example if you have 100 to 500 you should look a an all in one surround 
sound system.  If you have more look at receivers and speakers.


First a sound bar is just what it sounds like, it is a row of several 
speakers that has better sound than most TV.  It is placed just in frunt and 
below the screen.  In most cases it is self powered and takes input from 
TVs.  The one I have in one of our rooms also has blue tooth so you can play 
music from your phone and other blue tooth devices.

If you want a true receiver capable of 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 surround sound then you 
may want to look at a Yahama.  With the Yahama phone app they are 
compleately accessable via your phone.  The only help I needed was the 
screen setup to enter the password for my wifi network, and if you hard wire 
it to your roughter you do not need any help to set it up.  Please remember 
if you go with a receiver you will need speakers.  I do not know what your 
budgit is.
For a nice / starter setup receiver and speakers you are talking 800 to 
1000.

A lower budget alternative is a surround kit.  These come with a small 
receiver, front speaker (bar) and some time a front left and right with left 
and right rear speakers.  Depending on the quality these go from 200 to 
1000.  They work quite well for smaller rooms.
I have found these kits not accessable unless you memorize buttons.

A sound bar may be a more economic alternative and take up less space too.
Those usually have connections for connecting existing equipment.
