Your experience doesn't match mine. I've been using Skype since
version 3.19 or something. On the latest Skype on Windows 10 and using
NVDA I can easily chat, I can easily send and receive files, I can
make and recieve calls, I can listen to voicemail messages, etc. I
have never used Skype on an iPhone and prefer not to on any smart
phone or tablet as I've not learned how to. It sounds like you would
need to take the time to learn how to use the program on your computer
instead of just saying that "Skype has become very difficult to use
with screen readers." After all I guess I could say the same thing
about using Skype on any platform other than a computer but the actual
problem is that I haven't taken the time to learn how to use it on a
smart phone or tablet yet.

I've helped some customers send and receive files, listen to voicemail
messages I've left them, and read and reply to my text messages on
Skype.

Skuype has not become very difficult to use with screen readers at all
it has just updated and evolved. Change is part of life and nothing
stays the same forever. One either evolves with it or stays Stuck in
the past eventually losing what one didn't keep up with.

It does sound like you have computer issues of one type or another
though if you lose speech when you start Skype as that shouldn't be
happening. Maybe you should address that issue first.
