1. You will not lose any data or programs
2. You will want to make sure the notebook is completely shutdown, not hibernate, not sleep, not suspend.
3. You want to make sure your power cord is completely unplugged from the notebook
4. Depending on the make and model depends on where the battery is, what kind of battery, rather it’s user accessible, and the proper instructions on actually pulling it out.

Please provide the most detail you can as to which manufacturer, make, and model you have and I’ll be able to help you out!

Hi,
You should not lose any data when changing your battery. However, I cannot provide you specific steps, as each laptop is different, and some modern laptops do not have user replaceable batteries.
