[Electronics-Talk] Braille watch alternatives

For those of you who own a talking atomic clock or watch, or are considering
the purchase of one as an alternative to a Braille timepiece, be aware that
the National Bureau of Standards has proposed shutting down radio station
WWV in its 2019 budget. As many of you know, WWV, based in Colorado,
transmits a daily time signal that synchronizes millions of atomic clocks
and watches to the correct time. If WWV were to be shut down, these
devices would be rendered obsolete and would have to subsequently be set
manually, which would be a major hassle for the thousands of blind consumers
who already own them , for which they paid a hefty premium. So if you are
considering the purchase of a talking atomic clock or watch, save your money
and wait until the future of WWV is clearer. Under a mandate from the
President, all federal agencies have been ordered to reduce their budgets by
at least 5% for fiscal year 2019, and the NBs, which operates WWV,
apparently believes that it has outlived its usefulness. . There is a good
chance that WWV will be shut down if the Republicans retain control of
Congress after next month's midterm elections. If you feel that this move
is yet another affront to us blind consumers, cast your vote accordingly on
Election Day.

Gerald

Chris, it does sound interesting, but it sure is big. Last I looked it only
came in man-size, kinda big for my more dainty wrist. I had heard they were
working on a ladies' version, but didn't see it.

Santiago, the Tisot is just a dial. You run your finger around the dial,
and, when you reach the hour, it vibrates one way, and the minutes vibrate
another way. At least that's my understanding; Chris can correct me.

One nice thing about the Tissot is that there are no exposed parts and
you never have to lift the crystal or expose any parts at all. This is
why I think it should pretty much last forever. It's an expensive,
heavy, nice looking watch, so I wear it when I dress up. It's also
rugged, so I also wear it when I go kayaking.
