Sorry if this has been covered as I am new on this thread, but will the it
signal the phone through the app directly, or does it have to always go
through an echo device?

Yes, it will not allow two way communication without the echo spot or the
echo show. It will however connect to a echo dot to alert you when someone
is at the door and you can see the video on your phone and talk to the
person through your phone app.
