Hi Elizabeth:

You can use the ring doorbell independent of a wired doorbell, but you will 
have to take out and charge the rechargeable battery every few months.  Even 
though your house is old, the old doorbell wiring can still be used. 
Whatever you think is more convenient for you.



As far as a security system, the ring will show the door and the surrounding 
area, such as a hallway or driveway.
If you live alone, you would have to get sighted assistance to tell you 
about the video, but you can talk to the person at the door through the ring 
app on your phone or an amazon smart speaker, such as a Echo spot or Echo 
show.
