I have a similar problem with my new laptop.  Like Matthew said, I have to use the function key, which, in mty case, is between the left Windows key and the left control key.
I figured out the required key combinations by turning on Jaws keyboard help, which is Jaws key +1.  Then I could press all kinds of key combinations and hear what they would do.  
Be warned, sometimes the F keys on the very top are assigned to things like mute or volume.  I pressed F4, and then went crazy trying to figure out why Jaws stopped talking.  Well, F4 was mute.  Why oh why.
