[Electronics-Talk] [External] Re: Electric Vs. Gas ranges

Mine has dials for the burners which could be marked periodically. I just
kind of get used to about where, for example, medium and high and low are
and since the temperature is graduated like a gas stove, it is quite
reliable and should you desire to change, it responds immediately like a gas
stove. My oven defaults to 350 as I believe most do these days and I have
the numbers marked to punch in something different if I desire. I love it.

I worked with someone who had a Bosch (sp) brand of induction stove and
oven. The oven worked like one would expect, but the touch pad on the stove
was so convoluted, that even the sighted assistant we used to try to make
reliable tactile markers for the settings was confused, as the controls did
not work the same way every time. I cannot speak to the way other induction
cooktops work, and even other models of Bosch may work better. Sorry that I
cannot tell you the model. I just know that the controls were on the front
middle of the cooktop. She could easily use one of the burners, but if she
wanted to have two going at the same time, it caused a huge problem.

I would be interested to know if anyone has one similar, and they have
figured out a way to make it work. I am fairly good at making off-the-shelf
appliances work, but this one baffled me.

Thanks everyone.

The oven is standard. I don't know about price comparison.

Hi Kay and List,

How do induction cook tops compare, in price to a regular electric range?
Does the oven function like a standard electric oven?

I have been using a gas stove since I was six and my mom taught me to light
the Pilot light for the oven. I guess, different strokes for different
folks. It just depends on what you are comfortable with. I much prefer the

gas because it is much easier to adjust and have the results happen
instantly rather than having to wait for things to cool down. Although, I
am really looking at the induction cook top as another option. Not just the

ceramic smooth top stove with burners built in to it, but this is a method
that works with magnetic pots and pans. It is really responsive like
working with a gas stove but only gets hot where the pan is. We have been
using the PIC which stands for, precision induction cook top. They are
great and if you are afraid of using a gas stove, this is every bit as
responsive. Gas is great, but so is this method.

I can tell you from personal experience that thousands and thousands of
tenants in New York City, including many who are blind, still have
old-fashioned gas ovens that require lighting the gas pilot inside the oven
cavity with a match. How can this be, you might wonder. By law, landlords
are only required to furnish a stove that works. They are not required to
furnish a stove that is also safe for a blind tenant. Most pre-war buildings
do not have wiring that is adequate enough to handle the heavy loads imposed
by dozens or hundreds of electric stoves, and so most pre-war apartment
buildings have gas stoves. . I had to fight with my landlord for years to
get him to replace my 1950's-era gas stove that was an accident waiting to
happen with a more modern, safer model with electronic ignition. I explained
to his lackey, the building manager, that if I ever suffered any harm
because I was injured trying to light the pilot with a match, I would sue
the landlord's ass off. He finally got the message, and I have had no
problems using the gas stove with electronic ignition that the super
installed a few years ago to replace the clunker that had been sitting in my
kitchen since the Truman administration.
