My husband has the Microspeak recorder. It's little, has good battery life, charges with a USB cable, and is easy to use. It has helpful spoken messages or beeps to indicate what's happening. My husband is not a gadget guy, but he likes that gadget. We bought it at state convention, so can't say where to get it online. I think it was about $60.

need a simple little voice recorder for logging ham contacts in the field.
each note will probably be no more than ten to fifteen seconds in length.
will transcribe into my log when I get home.
prefer small, easy to operate, long battery life. don’t need tons of features.
what is the group’s wisdom?
