Yes, they do have talking boxes.  We have them.  Here in SC, they are box #110 and box #210.  The 210 box has DVR capability.  That is the only difference.  The installer guy said at first that the boxes did not have a talking feature.  My husband told him nicely that we have several friends who have them and we know for a fact they do.  He did some digging and found out how to activate the talking feature on the boxes.  It was great.  He was excited to learn about this so he could help his legally blind grandma.

Yes, DIRECTV has a box that talks.  Not every feature is accessible but the guide, the DVR, and the other major features are.  It also announces what channel it is on and what program is showing.
