Wonder if his best bet is to save the books to Drop Box and then transfer them to a flash drive, via a PC.

There is no easy way to do this.
Depending on the type of books, you might be able to share the book from the app you are reading them in, share them from the files app, or need to re-download them from the source. You were almost certainly not be able to copy your books onto a flash drive.
