[Electronics-Talk] An Introduction and Question

I have also found that a low-profile Bluetooth keyboard is helpful too for navigation through more complex information. Then one can dictate information as well.

There are portable type Braille displays too which cost far less than they once did but are still an investment.

I haven't been as pleased with the audio quality of voice calls on both Verizon and AT&T though. So I know others who have both an iPhone or Android phone and a flip phone. With plans from Consumer Cellular for around $20 for unlimited talk/text limited data and up, as well as the the same with other carriers who aren't the big box cellular providers, one does have affordable options.

Hi Jen, I would look for the phone number for Apple store. And find out if they have beginner programs to learn how to use the iPhone and also mention that you’re blind or maybe they may even have a disability course to learn how to use voiceover. No sense to get an iPhone until you know the basics of how to use it. It is a lot of money to spend and you May get very frustrated I’m trying to learn how to use it. If I can find a beginners tutorial, i’ll try to post it here. Or if somebody finds it before I can. Please post it.

Hi,

Hi Blind McGiver and all -

I've never used iDevices before. I've used a braille display with a computer though, and I've heard of VoiceOver. So I Know what you mean.

Jen

I also forgot to mention that all iPhones have a built-in screen reader if you’re not familiar with it. Called voiceover. Also can add a braille display to it. I’m not sure how familiar you are with the technology or one so I’m just guessing you don’t know how much. I apologize if you’re probably smarter than me maybe. LOL

Amanda, you have an excellent point. I, too, am a lifelong braille reader. I was so fortunate to have received quality instruction in k9indergarten.

Back on topic - I would be looking for a cell phone or iPhone that at least talks, if it doesn't have braille display support.

Everyone's needs aren't quite the same.

Most phones these days offer Bluetooth pairing. However pairing with specific Braille displays is dependent on other factors at times.Everyone doesn't read Braille as well.I'm a lifelong proficient Braille user but Idon't require Braille for everything.

For a senior, whether or not they have lo vision or other eyesight issues, a clearly readable display is helpful. My Mom isn't visually impaired but she likes the larger display on the smart flip phone I obtained for her.

I know this question wasn't directed at me, but...

Blind McGiver - I think the flip phone you're looking for for your mother should talk. If she reads braille, the phone should also have braille display support.

Would anybody have any good suggestions on a good flip phone for the blind. I’ve tried to give my mother my old iPhones and she just can’t understand how to use it. No matter how hard I try to just tell her let’s start with the basics on just say using Siri and just make a phone call but she just doesn’t wanna touch it

Jen:

It depends if you want a simple flip phone, or a smart phone.I am sure there will be a debate among members about the advantages and disadvantages of each, but, in this day and age, I think a smart phone would be a good choice.

As for me, I think the iPhone has the best in accessibility, but that will probably be debated also.Hahahaha.

There will be more of a learning curve for a smart phone, but worth the challenge.Do you have access to any Apple stores? They have classes for blind users, at least, they do where I live.
